What is white gold?

What is white gold?

At Claudia Jewellers we love using a variety of different metals, and one of these is white gold. White gold jewellery continues to prove to be extremely popular. This is likely due to it being such a versatile metal colour which can be suited to any look, from evening glamour to everyday chic casual.

How do you make white gold?

White gold is an alloy of gold and some white metals such as silver and palladium. This mixture of metals gives the stunning 'white' look. White gold can be produced in an array of karats, for example; 18ct, 14ct or 9ct. As an example, let's compare how you would create 18ct white gold compared to 18ct yellow gold:
  • White gold - Mix 75% gold with 25% of other metals such as silver and palladium.
  • Yellow gold - Mix 75% gold with 25% other metals such as copper and zinc.
As you can see, the amount of gold is the same, but the alloy is different. Traditionally, nickel was actually used to create white gold. However, over the years this method has evolved due to an adverse reaction people were having to nickel (at Claudia Jewellers we don't use nickel!).

Caring for your jewellery

When a piece of white gold jewellery, like a ring, is first created, it is coated with another metal called Rhodium. The purpose of using Rhodium is to make your jewellery look even more white! In addition, it also is incredibly hard, which acts as a natural protection for your piece of jewellery. To ensure your jewellery stays white and strong, we recommend having it serviced with another layer of Rhodium every 12-18 months. At Claudia Jewellers we offer jewellery servicing and repairs which you can find more about here.

Why do we love white gold?!

There are so many reasons... where do we start? Let's try the following reasons;
  • You can team it with other beautiful gemstones and sapphires so easily. Think of colours like; blue, pink, green and yellow!.
  • It's so versatile! It could be a classic creation, unique design or a DIF Ring... all of these look sensational using white gold.
  • You can dress is up, or dress is down.
